Hulverton served on board the Esmeercadia, a ship from Krawk Island, at the same time as Captain Threelegs (though he wasn't a Captain at that point). The ship was sank during a thunderstorm, but Hulverton, Threelegs and the First Mate of the ship made it to Mystery Island. They managed to hold out against the coconut tribe of natives for two weeks until a ship named the Peophintine arrived. Hulverton's brother happened to be the Quartermaster or Jack of Coins, onboard the ship, and the three managed to escape the island.
