Buttons was a lonely child, and wished to become a plushie so she would feel loved. She eventually became an apprentice to Sophie the Swamp Witch, and learned how to make potions from her. She used one potion to create a spell which turned all of Neopia, including herself, into plushies.
Buttons is an assumed name. It is unknown what her real name is. Before becoming a plushie, she looked more like this:
The book in which Buttons appears is an in-universe graphic novel. As such, it is unclear if she ever really existed at all. There is a sequel to the book, in which Buttons reconciles with Sophie.
