The Void Within was a plot that began on the 17th of June, 2024 (Year 26) and lasted until the 16th of June, 2026 (Year 28). It introduced the Void colour to Neopets, the adventure pass system, and due to the number of plot pauses, is the longest running plot in Neopets history.
While the plot properly began in 2024, a series of annual events in the run up to the plot as well as changes to site features contained narrative beats that directly tied into the story. Throughout the plot proper, annual events also referenced and built on the plot's narrative.
These teasers began at the conclusion of Y25's Festival of Neggs, where Kari, the Negg Faerie decided she would talk to Illusen about growing pollution on Neopia's surface. At that year's Faerie Festival, Queen Fyora instructed Illusen and Jhudora to host the celebration and figure out a solution to the growing pollution at the same time. Through their investigations, the pair discovered that the source of the pollution was liquid obsidian engines developed by Monty McTaggart, fuelling an industrial revolution across Neopia. In turn, they discovered that Monty was deliberately adding to the pollution on the orders of Malkus Vile. With the Faeries drawing close, Malkus enlisted Balthazar to bottle Illusen. She was saved by Jhudora, and both Balthazar and Malkus Vile were arrested. In the aftermath, Jhudora used donations from festival visitors to develop a potion that would remove the pollution from the atmosphere. Malkus Vile himself was unbeknownst to the Faeries shown to be secretly working for Drakara and Vira who were hoping to undermine the rule of Queen Fyora. Satisfied with the outcome, Drakara readied a special paint brush known as the Acrimonious Brush for new plans.
At Halloween, Reginald prepared a set of spooky stories for the public from his own archives. Vira inserted her own story, which threatened of events to come. At the Advent Calendar, Orion appeared to request the help of Reina. He had found a magical lyre, and he discovered that by playing it at the Advent Calendar, he was granted visions of the future in his dreams. On the Day of Giving, that magic manifested so that anyone visiting the calendar could see the visions. It showed Nyx and Juni lost in the Void, encountering a strange beast later identified as Vocivus and becoming infected by the Void by him. Juni created a device to stop the infection spreading across Nyx, fully succumbing to the Void in the process. Emotional and feeling she had lost Juni, Nyx accidentally created a portal to Brightvale.
In early Year 26, characters across Neopia began to mysteriously turn Grey, and be unable to be painted any other colour. This began with Ellia, but then spread to the Grooming Parlour Shopkeeper, the Breadmaster, Hubert, Kari, Inah, the Bank Manager, King Skarl, the shrine of King Coltzan (showing that objects as well as beings were being painted), the Discarded Magical Blue Grundo Plushie of Prosperity, the Giant Omelette (presumably as a result of the original egg guarded by Seraphina being turned grey), Miles, the Money Tree, and the slot machine managed by Trudy.
Unable to manage running Y26's Festival of Neggs due to being painted Grey, Kari asked for Orion to help him. Using the magical lyre, Orion received new visions leading him underground to Moltara, where he discovered the Tuffala species of Petpet hidden, along with a music cylinder attuned to the element of fire.
The plot itself began with all of Meridell being painted grey overnight. At the same time, the events from Orion's vision happened, with a dimensional rift opening in the sky above Neopia. Queen Fyora ordered a council of leaders from across Neopia's many nations to convene in Altador and discuss the situation. Meanwhile, the Space Faerie, Mira investigated facilities belonging to Dr. Sloth for his involvement, but found no evidence that he was free. Dr. Landelbrot and Jerdana worked together to develop a device to safely store unstable void particles that had been leaking into Neopia through the dimensional rift. Queen Fyora, meanwhile, contacted the Grey Faerie, Baelia for her assistance.
Baelia was doubtful of her ability to help, given that a Grey Faerie is different to being a Faerie painted Grey, and needed a new name to regain her powers. However, she and her friend Tavi agreed to help. They hiked towards Meridell, but found Brightvale being painted Grey as they pass through, with strange Shade creatures attacking the city under the orders of Vira. As the pair tried to help, Vira fled, and Nyx emerged through the dimensional rift with Juni. In order to get to Altador and heal Juni, the four decided to team up.
In Altador, Queen Fyora asked Luxinia to use her previously unknown abilities to sense other people's memories to confirm Nyx's account of becoming a Virtupets delivery pilot with Juni as her engineer before falling into a wormhole to the mysterious Void dimension, where time passes differently. Dr. Landelbrot created another version of the dampening device on Nyx's arm to stabilise Juni, and created a better version for Nyx as well. Meanwhile Seshatia the Library Faerie arrived with the book Navigating the Void, which contained details written by an ancient warlock about the mysterious Void.
At the Altador Cup, Orion used his magical lyre again, being drawn to the location of an air elemental musical cylinder. Meanwhile, Kiko Lake was attacked and turned Grey. Scouts reported to Altador that Neopia Central may be the next target. Nyx, Juni, Baelia, Tavi, and Luxinia agreed to head to Neopia Central to try and stop the Grey Curse spreading any further, using the Walein to fly there.
In Neopia Central, Nyx attempted to find her brother Ozzy, only to find their former home deserted. Shades once more attacked the group, led by Vira and the Grey Painter who had been using the Acrimonious Brush to paint lands grey. Nyx revealed that the Grey Painter was in fact her brother, attempting to spread his own depression to others. Feeling that Nyx abandoned him and rejecting her explanations, Ozzy conjured a tidal wave of grey paint which painted all of Neopia Central grey as well. The group managed to flee the scene, making it as far as the entrance to the Haunted Woods to regroup. There, Tavi told the group about how she lost her foot in a mountain climbing accident after losing her friend group, while Luxinia worked to calm everyone's fears by claiming she sensed Ozzy was scared and could be redeemed. The group were contacted by Queen Fyora, who claimed that Vira and Ozzy were now south of the Haunted Woods, and seemed to be heading towards Altador.
At the Faerie Festival, Orion joined Illusen and Jhudora. Attempting to use his magical lyre again, he became possessed by an entity that would later be revealed as the Muse. The Muse attempted to reconcile Illusen and Jhudora, weakening Orion in the process. With the help of Seshatia, the group broke the lyre and released Orion from his possession, locating a musical cylinder attuned to the element of earth at the same time. Shortly after, Reginald curated a second set of spooky stories at Halloween, and included a recently discovered story about a mysterious 'Faerie Artificer', a position that once held prestige in the court of the Faerie Queen. As the Month of Celebrating approached, Orion managed to locate a fourth elemental musical cylinder and ancient ruins that were capable of playing all four. Doing so, he found an ancient an broken tablet. He took the tablet to the Advent Calendar, and used its communal magic to restore the tablet, revealing an ancient image of the Muse's true form, a ghostly Draik. In the process, Orion fell into a deep coma.
As the grey curse spread, the island nation of Dacardia held several donation drives to help out, and many Yooyuball players from national teams volunteered to help their local communities as the Y27 Altador Cup was cancelled due to the crisis. Queen Fyora disbanded her council of leaders in Altador, with world leaders heading back to their home nations to prepare them against the Shade army. Wraiths, seemingly somehow related to the Shades, reappeared briefly in Dacardia before being beaten back, and the Lost Desert was turned grey by Ozzy as the Shade army progressed.
Hoping to reach Altador before the Shade army, the group in the Haunted Woods followed a rumour Tavi had heard about a passage that led through the mountains to Altador. They were joined by a stray Doglefox that followed the group. Using Juni's newly discovered void power to see through objects, the group discovered the passage in the mountains. The group became separated in the darkness, with Luxinia admitting her crippling fear of the dark before they reunited. Baelia also revealed that prior to becoming a Grey Faerie, she had been a Light Faerie apprenticed to the Crafting Faerie, Delina, and was even being considered as a new Faerie Artificer. Using her crafting skills, Baelia fixed the group's lantern. The group encountered Luperus, but the Doglefox was able to befriend him, and he led the group to the entrance to the Ruins of Elderus, which lead through the mountains to Altador. The ruins were filled with references contained within the Navigating the Void book which Seshatia had located. The ruins were filled with puzzles, which Nyx was helped to solve by the guidance of the Muse's music. Throughout the ruins, the group discovered writings from the ancient Vandagyres who had inhabited and built them. They claimed that they were a cult devoted to the worship of Vocivus, who they believed would one day return to Neopia from the Void.
Leaving the Ruins of Elderus, the group reached Altador as the Shade army began their siege. Nyx encountered Ozzy once more, but a blast of grey paint aimed at her accidentally painted the Doglefox instead. Ozzy recognised the stray as Styx, his former Petpet. Sensing their opportunity, Luxinia and Baelia used the former's power to access the Grey Painter's memories. At that exact moment, Altador fell into a time warp, with time in the city grinding to a complete stop as life continued in the rest of Neopia. Many nations and leaders around the world used this time to gather supplies and lift the spirits of their citizens. At Halloween, a new story was discovered by Reginald. It was a report for the ancient Faerie Artificer on the experiments of the warlock Bertrand Ashby, who originally wrong the book Navigating the Void. Bertrand had been sucked into the Void during a confrontation with the Faerie scouts.
The time warp suddenly disappeared in Y28. With time proceeding normally again, Luxinia and Baelia experienced Ozzy's memories of Nyx leaving him in Neopia Central. They discover he had adopted Styx and befriended Vira as he tried to make money selling his paintings. Luxinia combines this with the memories of Styx and Vira to show Ozzy that he had been manipulated. Vira had befriended him to harness his painting power for the Acrimonious Brush, and when Styx had got in the way, Vira had driven him away. Then, she had led him to her patron, who had set the whole thing in motion, Drakara.
Experiencing these new memories, Ozzy had a a change of heart, and even Vira began to doubt her actions. Enraged at the failure of her minions, Drakara teleported directly to Altador. She cast Vira off as a failure, and chained Ozzy. Using her magic, she summoned Vocivus directly from the Void, and began to destroy Altador with him. Leaving the decimation in her wake, she took Ozzy and flew off with Vocivus, intending to reach Faerieland.
The remaining members of the group attempted to save citizens of Altador from the crumbling remains of their homes. Nyx briefly became buried in rubble, but used her new found Void powers and the guidance of the Muse to phase through the ruins through a strange dimension and survive. With Altador evacuated, the group constructed a horn to summon the Walein and follow Drakara to Faerieland.
In Faerieland, Drakara made short work of Fyora's defenders before reaching the Queen herself. Fyora recognised the other Faerie as her former friend, who had served as the first Faerie Artificer and helped her become Queen in the first place. However, she had learned of the Void from the report on Bertrand Ashby, and began creating forbidden weapons using it despite Fyora's order not to. As a result, Fyora had used a banned Faerie magic known as the Grey Ritual to turn Drakara into a Grey Faerie and cast her out. Drakara revealed that following this, the Darkest Faerie had granted her powers back in exchange for her service.
The two Faeries fought, with Drakara triumphing over Fyora and using her magic to paint Fyora grey. With Vocivus, she then began to turn Faerieland itself grey, and destroy Faerie City as she had done with Altador. The group arrived in Faerieland to confront Drakara at the Rainbow Fountain. There, Baelia realised Drakara was in fact Jennumara, the Faerie that turned her Grey. Jennumara was the new name the Darkest Faerie had given Drakara. Drakara further revealed that both Vira and Ozzy were just experiments to prove that the Acrimonious Brush worked. Drakara had intended Baelia to use it, and had abducted her to try and convince her to join forces in turning the whole world grey. She tried to tempt Baelia with a transformation just like hers, but Baelia realised that her friends made her stronger. This realisation allowed her to transform, regaining her wings and magic in a new form, and taking the name Iridesia.
As Iridesia, she was able to counter Drakara's magic. However, in the course of the battle the crystal which Drakara was using to control Vocivus shattered, freeing him from her control. He promptly attacked his former jailer, flatly defeating her. At the same time, Orion woke from his coma, still possessed by the Muse. The gathered heroes of Neopia joined the fight alongside the group to try and defeat Vocivus, with Nyx rescuing Ozzy from the creature's back. The Muse, possession Orion, arrived at the battleground and explained that Vocivus is only able to exist in Neopia for brief periods normally. But that because so much of Neopia had been painted grey, it lacked its normal vibrancy and he was able to remain. The Muse claimed that Iridesia's new magic could return the colour to Neopia. Vocivus targeted the Muse, knocking him out and returning Orion to control of his body.
With Fyora evacuating those who could not fight, the remaining group fought Vocivus. Ozzy realised that the Acrimonious Brush was the key, and with Iridesia's magic he managed to destroy it, returning colour to all the lands and individuals who had been painted grey. With Vocivus weakened by the colour, Nyx and Juni used their connection to the Void to force the creature back into the Void dimension.
In the aftermath of the battle, Fyora decided to step down as Faerie Queen given her failure with Drakara. In her place, she decreed there would be a Faerie Council, with Iridesia and Luxinia as its first two members. Ozzy and Nyx returned to Neopia Central, with Ozzy doing community service to paint at the Petpet Puddle and Nyx going on periodic adventures with Tavi. A small dimensional tear in the sky remained, linking Neopia to the Void.
The Muse contacted Orion again, revealing that the forces which Drakara answered to were still active. The Muse needed to locate an anchor of his to tell Orion more, like the stone tablet Orion had located, and revealed he believed one was hidden in the lair of the Tyrannian Beast. In order to access it, Muse guided Orion to repair his lyre and add four magical strings to it. Using the Lyre, Orion subdued the Beast and located a locket containing a picture of an Ogrin, which was the Muse's second anchor.
Using both anchors, the Muse granted Orion a vision of the Drakara's survival, and her return to the Darkest Faerie, who had recovered from her injuries sustained during the Wraith Resurgence plot. The Three revealed themselves as working with the Darkest Faerie, and had even provided Vocivus to Drakara. Despite the failure, the Three urged the Darkest Faerie to form a coalition of villains to take over Neopia, suggesting Xandra, Dr. Sloth, and the Shadow Usul as her generals, with Mr. Krawley, Malkus Vile, Khan the Unstoppable, Parlax, Balthazar, Captain Scarblade, Eliv Thade, Meuka, Masila, the Chia Clown, Hubrid Nox, and Lady Frostbite as other members.
Meanwhile, in the Void, a void infected Lord Kass, previously thought dead after the Battle for Meridell had been fighting Shades. Missing an arm and his memories, Kass discovered his old sword. Using his void powers, he formed a new arm from void tentacles, and reclaimed memories of his hatred of Meridell.
Participation in the plot was more similar to that of an event, with users completing repeated actions for points, including finding essences hidden across the site, battling, or volunteering Neopets to help out in the hospital. These plots were capped on a daily and eventually weekly basis as the plot progressed. In addition, users were given one off point bonuses for completing certain achievements. NC Cookies were available at the NC Mall that allowed users to earn additional points over the weekly limit.
The plot's Epilogue formed a short quest to access the Lair of the Beast daily and Orion's warnings of events to come. This section of the plot remained open indefinitely and did not require participation in any other portion of the plot.
Introduced in this plot was the ability to replay chapters after the plot had ended, via paid Chapter Replay Fortune Cookies. Once activated, these allow a user to replay one chapter of their choice and all of the associated activites, earning plot points that count towards trophies and associated items. There is no upper limit on the number of cookies that can be activated. The community fight against Vocivus and time-based achievements are excluded from the cookie.
Numerous awards were handed out for those who participated:
During the plot, a prize shop was available in which users could spend points as they earn them. This prize shop was periodically updated as the plot continued with additional items. Some items were retired or limited shortly after the plot ended.
Additional items were released by reading the plot's comic, as well as from completing sets of achievements.
Collecting certain amounts of void essences per week also awarded bonus items from a pool, as well as volunteering, battling, and completing special games released for the plot.
Premium users and those who purchased NC cookies were able to receive double prizes from many sources throughout the plot.
The plot introduced an Adventure Pass, the first event to feature one on Neopets, which awarded additional items based on point thresholds met.
Trophies were available at the start of the plot and updated in real time as users gained more points. Some sources of additional points, such as those granted by NC cookies, were not counted on trophies.
A number of different avatars were released through the plot, tied to completing specific activities.
