The Festival of Neggs is a recurring event that is usually held annually based on the start of spring and the blooming of many varieties of Negg plants. The timing usually coincides with the Earth festival of Easter. The festival is usually run by the Negg Faerie, Kari who travels down from her home within Terror Mountain for the duration. Although the festival grounds sometimes appear elsewhere in Neopia, it is usually held in farmland between Neopia Central and Faerieland. The Merchant's Council objected to the Festival being held within Neopia Central itself.
Generally, the festival consists of Kari hiding a selection of new Negg varieties around Neopia, which festival attendees locate by following cryptic clues provided by the Negg Faerie.
Although a similar festival was held by Rosie in Year 11 (2009), the Festival itself did not begin until Year 12 (2010) when Kari arranged it. She then constructed the festival grounds with the help of attendees in Year 13 (2011), which she continued to reuse in future festivals.
In Year 14 (2012) Kari's assistant Zaira discovered an old journal detailing the efforts of a group known as the Hidden Negg Society, which hid a mysterious Clockwork Negg many centuries ago. Hurok, Ricky, Rutu, Selvin, and Voughn all split up, taking decoy Neggs to different parts of Neopia in the hopes of disguising the Clockwork Negg's true location from it's pursuer, many years later revealed to be the Neggnapper.
Festival attendees managed to decode the clues left in the journal to discover that the Clockwork Negg had been taken to Shenkuu by Rutu. Following her trail, they discovered her skeleton, having seemingly died of old age, still guarding the Clockwork Negg. They managed to solve the puzzle hidden on the Clockwork Negg, opening it and accidentally releasing the fearsome beast sealed within, known as the Neggbreaker. Thankfully, the Neggbreaker was defeated using an amulet hidden within the Clockwork Negg.
In Year 17 (2015), Topsi took over organising the festival for the year. Over the following years, Topsi continued to host the festival, often acting in odd ways that festival attendees found creepy.
Kari returned to host the festival in Year 22 (2020), with Topsi having mysteriously disappeared a few weeks prior to the festival's start along with the Neggs. The Negg-Gazer, a psychic who had previously hosted the festival's NC area, offered to help locate them. Eventually, it was discovered that the Neggnapper had returned to steal the Neggs as revenge for the defeat of his brother, the Neggbreaker. The Neggs were recovered, and the Neggnapper disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived.
In Year 23 (2021) Kari again hosted the festival, and managed to locate Topsi hidden in the Rainbow Fountain in Faerieland. Topsi returned to the festival grounds, but began acting even more oddly, asking about the Space Faerie, Mira, one of Kari's closest friends. Dr. Neggistential eventually discovered that Topsi was in fact a robot, constructed by Dr. Sloth as a sleeper agent to get close to Kari and eliminate the Space Faerie when she appeared. By impersonating Mira, Kari and Dr. Neggistential were able to activate Topsi's hidden program and disable him. Dr. Neggistential suggested that he may be able to reprogram Topsi to remove the Sloth programming.
In Year 24 (2022), Kari decided to move the festival from its usual grounds outside Neopia Central to the outskirts of Neovia in the Haunted Woods, taking over the ruins of the Meepit Oaks Sanatorium for the Psychologically Fragile for the duration thanks to the organisation of Tippens. Throughout the event, Kari noticed that Neggs were being found drained of all their juices, and the residents of Neovia including the Crumpetmonger began to report sightings strange ectoplasm following a Kougra defacing a tomb in the graveyard.
With the help of Sophie, Kari eventually discovered that the mysterious goo was not ectoplasm at all, and that the trail was leading back to the tomb in the graveyard. There, they discovered Professor Kugar, who revealed he had opened a sealed chamber in the tomb to try and locate a mythical species of Petpet that feeds on Neggs. He had since discovered they excreted the ectoplasm-like substance to find their way back home after draining the Neggs in Neovia. He named this species the Talpidat, introducing them to Neopia.
In Year 25 (2023), Kari once again took the festival on tour, turning up on the Virtupets Space Station at the invitation of Mira, the Space Faerie. Mira had discovered a collection of mysterious, Negg-shaped objects in deep space, and requested Kari's help in identifying. However, Kari was as mystified as her friend. The pair brought in Magon to help, but after a few days he mistakenly identified them as Giant Space Fungus spores. Eventually, Kari brought in Orion on the recommendation of Tippens, who agreed that the Neggs were not Neggs at all, but some different type of lifeform. He eventually discovered they were some form of egg, that would hatch under conditions similar to where they were found. Mira helped to simulate the high gravity conditions of the quasar where they were found, and the eggs hatched to reveal a new species of Petpet, which Mira named the Bython.
In Year 26 (2024), Kari fell victim to a curse spreading across Neopia that left her coloured grey and unable to muster the energy to run the festival fully, despite its return to the normal festival grounds. Orion returned, offering to help her organise the clues, but with the alterior motive of trying to decode visions he had been having since the Advent Calendar a few months previously. Although his visions led him to Moltara initially, he then began having visions of locations across Neopia, where festival attendees caught sight of strange creatures. Eventually, Orion managed to narrow down his visions to Moltara once again, where a new species of Petpet called the Tuffala was discovered. The creatures had been disturbed by the construction of the Obsidian Mining Company building in Moltara, and an earthquake that followed allowed them to escape into Neopia, where they could instantly move through lava. Hidden on one of the Tuffalas, Orion discovered a cylinder for a unique music box, made out of lava.
In Year 27 (2025), Kari remained a victim of the grey curse. The shopkeepers of Neopia offered to help her organise the Festival of Neggs that year, only to have the Neggs mysteriously disappear as the festival began. Anonymous notes led her and festival attendees to the new locations the Neggs were hidden in, along with notes referencing the events of festivals past. Eventually, it was revealed that the 'thief' was Kari's apprentice, Zaira, who had arranged for the shopkeepers to make their offer in the first place, with the aim of giving Kair a little fun by being able to join in with the hunt herself.
Generally the Festival of Neggs takes place as a scavenger hunt across pages that are accessible by navigating the explore section of the Neopets site, finding hidden neggs based on daily clues provided by the festival host. Additional activities vary between years, but can be found on Jellyneo's Festival of Neggs guides.
